What is your most rewarding accomplishment as a finance executive?
I take great pride in cleaning up a company’s financial reporting while making continual improvements. My most rewarding experience was my first CFO position. I was able to build a finance team organically and overhaul the reporting processes which ultimately facilitated the sale of the company with a large return for the stakeholders.

How did you discover your passion for finance?
I have always been great at math and problem solving; finance has allowed me to put these gifts into practice helping companies improve their financial reporting and accounting processes with a clean look at the past and clear forecast of the future.

What is one piece of information you wish someone had told you when you first started your finance career?
Just because you start in one field or career does not mean that you are stuck there. I thought working for a big four accounting firm would be my dream job. It provided excellent exposure and growth but ended up being a stepping-stone to what I truly find fulfilling.

What job would you pursue if you weren’t in finance?
I spent six years as a fisheries biologist after deciding I didn’t want to work in an office every day. It was a great experience and gave me a valuable alternative perspective. Ultimately the growth opportunities are what brought me back to finance.

What are some of your personal hobbies outside of finance?
I enjoy anything outdoors whether it’s hiking, biking, skiing, fishing or getting out on the water. Lately I’ve been getting serious about sailing and am about to compete in my first ocean race from Annapolis to Newport in June. I’ve also started getting back into golf, which has provided many beneficial networking opportunities.

I try to give back and currently serve as the treasurer of the West Annapolis Community Association while often volunteering at my children’s elementary school.
